Like most people, I felt mixed emotions when Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race . . . but mostly relief. Over decades of experience as a trust officer, I saw a surprising amount of dementia among clients and their families. It is a major source of both sadness and stress for everybody.
Republicans and Democrats will quibble endlessly whether Joe Biden did anything worth doing. Yes – He did do this – he put the issue of age-related mental health on everybody’s agenda to discuss!
There is no vaccine to prevent dementia, but that disease demonstrates why you need to give somebody your general personal power of attorney . . . usually a spouse or a family member or attorney! It won’t eliminate the disease, but it will make it easier to live with. What about a special power of attorney, which limits the number of things they can do in your behalf? A business partner? A co-owner on rental property? A neighbor?
